Claytone Products Inc.
has been producing clay roofs and floor tiles since 1989. However, the company's history goes back to 1960, when its predecessor, Building Supplies Limited was founded by Mr. Fred Laforet. Levi Piccoli, an Italian who built the plant with his brother, is still with the company.
From the 1960's, Building Supplies Limited converted clay into high strength useful building materials, and through its construction arm, International Constructions Limited,
used clay blocks for the walls and floors in several of the hotels and commercial buildings in Barbados, including the state owned hospital - the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the University of the West Indies Cave Hill
Campus.
Claytone Products Inc
. acquired the assets of Building Supplies in 1989. Claytone is repositioning
itself as a niche producer of high quality and long life products to enhance the built environment.
Claytone Products Inc. is a specialist producer of varied hues of terra-cotta products baked at 875 degrees Celsius in a Hoffman Kiln. These hues of lighter,
mid and darker terra-cotta products provide the environmentally superior product that is undoubtedly Claytone. These carefully hand-packed products provide a different ambiance to the fully mechanized alternatives.
In 1997, the company
received a signal honor - the renowned and highly acclaimed Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. The Entrepreneur of the Year award is given annually by Ernst and Young and Canadian
Imperial Commercial Bank Caribbean Limited. |
